Substrate Preparation Checklist for Durable Colored Pavement

Crew preparing and repairing a pavement substrate before colored surfacing installation

Adhesion and surface uniformity depend on the substrate. A colored coating or anti-slip surfacing will follow the movement, contamination and texture of the pavement below it. Preparation should therefore be treated as a quality-control stage, not a quick cleaning step.

1. Identify the substrate

Confirm whether the surface is concrete, asphalt, a previous coating or a repair material. Record its age, known treatments and current use. Different substrates require different preparation and curing checks.

2. Inspect structural condition

Look for settlement, movement, pumping, widespread cracking, loose edges and unstable patches. Escalate structural defects to the project engineer. Surface material should not be used to hide an unresolved pavement failure.

3. Mark contamination and weak material

  • Oil, fuel, grease and tire residue
  • Dust, soil, algae and standing water
  • Concrete laitance, curing compound or sealer
  • Loose aggregate, polishing or poorly bonded previous coating

4. Complete repairs with compatible materials

Repair cracks, spalls and local defects using a method compatible with the substrate and the new surfacing. Allow repair materials to cure as required. Pay special attention to joints: movement joints should remain functional and should not be bridged unless the system is specifically designed for it.

5. Create the required surface profile

Use the approved mechanical or cleaning method to expose a sound, clean surface. Remove all residue from preparation. A profile that is too smooth may reduce bond, while uncontrolled aggressive preparation can damage the pavement.

6. Check moisture and weather

Verify that the substrate and forecast meet the product requirements. Dew, recent rain, trapped moisture and rising groundwater can all affect application. Record temperature, humidity and surface condition at the trial and during work.

7. Test a representative area

Apply the complete system to a trial section and inspect adhesion, coverage, texture and appearance after the specified cure. Keep photographs and test records as part of the handover file.

Always follow the current technical data sheet and project specification. If you are evaluating a FUXIN GROUP coating or anti-slip system, provide clear substrate photographs and repair history so the preparation discussion can be specific.
