Iron Oxide Pigment Dosage: How to Improve Concrete Color Consistency
Iron oxide pigment can produce durable color in concrete, pavers, mortar and other cement-based products. Consistent results, however, require control of the entire production process. Pigment dosage is only one variable.
Measure dosage against a fixed basis
Choose a consistent calculation basis—commonly the mass of cementitious material—and use it for every trial and production batch. Do not estimate by volume or shovel count. Weigh pigment with suitable equipment and document the actual amount.
Build a controlled trial series
Prepare several small batches using the same cement, aggregate, water, admixture, mixing time, mold and curing method. Change only the pigment dosage between samples. This shows the relationship between dosage and color under your real materials and process.
More pigment does not always produce a proportional visual change. At higher loading, color gain may become less noticeable while cost and mix behavior continue to change. The approved range should therefore be established by testing and the supplier's current guidance.
Control the other color variables
- Cement color and supplier
- Aggregate color, moisture and grading
- Water-to-cementitious-material ratio
- Admixtures and supplementary cementitious materials
- Mixing sequence and total mixing time
- Compaction, finishing and curing
Improve dispersion
Add pigment in a repeatable sequence and allow enough dry or initial mixing time for uniform distribution before final water adjustment, subject to the production method and technical data. Avoid pigment lumps and uncontrolled dust. Use appropriate handling equipment and PPE.
Approve physical samples, not screens
Digital images are useful for communication but cannot establish final color. Review cured samples under representative lighting and surface finish. Keep a signed master sample and define an acceptable visual or measured tolerance for production.
