Water-Based Wear-Resistant Pavement Coatings: Preparation and Application

Workers applying a blue water-based wear-resistant coating to prepared concrete pavement

A water-based wear-resistant pavement coating can refresh an existing asphalt or concrete surface, add functional color and improve the visual organization of a site. Typical applications include bicycle lanes, pedestrian routes, parking areas, parks, school zones and decorative public spaces.

Most coating problems begin below the visible surface. Good preparation, suitable weather and controlled application are more important than applying an extra-thick layer.

Confirm the substrate is suitable

Inspect the pavement for movement, moisture, oil, weak laitance, loose aggregate, polishing and previous coatings. Structural cracks and unstable areas should be repaired before coating. A finish cannot compensate for a failing base.

  • Concrete should be sound, clean and free of curing compounds or weak surface material.
  • Asphalt should be stable and sufficiently aged for the selected coating system.
  • Existing coatings should be tested for adhesion and compatibility.
  • Drainage paths, joints and utility covers should remain functional.

Prepare a clean, profiled surface

Remove dust, dirt, grease and poorly bonded material using the method appropriate to the substrate. Mechanical preparation may be required where the surface is dense or contaminated. After cleaning, allow the pavement to dry and verify moisture conditions according to the product instructions.

Use a trial area to set the method

A small on-site trial helps confirm color, coverage, texture, adhesion and application technique. It also gives the crew a reference for roller or spray passes, edge control and drying time. Mix only the quantity that can be applied within the specified working time.

Apply within the approved weather window

Do not coat during rain, on a visibly wet surface or when temperature and humidity are outside the product limits. Apply uniform layers, keep a controlled wet edge and protect adjacent surfaces. Reopening time should be based on actual curing conditions, not only the clock.

Inspect before handover

Check color uniformity, coverage, texture, adhesion at representative locations, clean edges and drainage. Record batch information and weather conditions for future maintenance.
